The company stated that Evapco's Ellipti-fin coils maintain a higher level of thermal performance than traditional coils, even in the presence of scale formation.

Evapco's new Ellipti-fin coil.

Evapco, a major US manufacturer of heat transfer products, has launched a new finned coil design called Ellipti-fin, which improves the thermal performance of closed-circuit coolers and evaporative condensers, increasing efficiency by an average of 25%, the company said On Twitter.

Ellipti-fin technology uses fins with an elliptical profile instead of the traditional circular fins. The elliptical profile allows more water and/or air to flow through the coil while minimizing any pressure loss. In addition, all rows of coils of Evapco products using the new Ellipti-fin technology have fins, not just a few rows. The company said that these innovations together improve energy efficiency in wet (evaporation) and dry operating modes. The technology can also save water when operating in wet mode.

Evapco's new eco-ATW closed-circuit cooler and eco-ATC evaporative condenser use Ellipti-fin technology.

Evapco has published the results of the R&D process to develop the new Ellipti-fin technology in the white paper. During this process, Evapco studied many parameters, including the optimal fin profile, height and spacing to maximize heat transfer efficiency.

The cooling industry is expected to question whether the heat transfer efficiency of the new elliptical fins will be inhibited by scale formation. Evapco conducted laboratory tests under conditions that promote scale formation. The test results are also included in the white paper.

The test found that the amount of scale formed on the Ellipti-fin coil was the same as that on the traditional bare tube coil, and both had 0.010 inches (0.25 mm) of scale after 45 days. At the beginning of the test, no scale was formed, and the thermal performance of Ellipti-fin was 19.9% higher than that of bare tube coils. At the end of the test, after the formation of scale, the difference was even greater, and the thermal performance of Ellipti-fin increased by 21.6%.

The conclusion is that when operating under similar conditions, Ellipti-fin is more resistant to the effects of fouling than traditional coils. "Compared with bare-tube Thermal-Pak coils, Ellipti-fin heat transfer coils retain a higher percentage of thermal performance levels during fouling," the white paper said.

"The higher performance and efficiency of this technology, when it encounters water chemical fouling, is because when heat is transferred from the tube surface to the fin, and then to the atmosphere, the fin surface temperature gradually decreases from the tube to the outer edge of the fin. ," the white paper explained.

In addition to eco-ATW and eco-ATC, Evapco also produces various coolers, including low-load ammonia/NH3 (R717) units. The latest member of the company's product line is the LCR-C air-cooled Evapcold chiller announced in December 2020.

Evapco also recently provided 31 low-cost devices to the Shamrock Foods warehouse in Colorado (USA) to serve seven different temperature zones instead of installing a large centralized system.
