The Senegalese sweetcorn season is still in full swing at Hermans Suikermais in the Netherlands. "We continue with that through April. From April 15, we'll start receiving the first harvest from Morocco, so we have a little overlap," says Giel Hermans.

Senegalese corn He is satisfied with how the Senegalese season is going. "We had access to sufficient, good quality supply. In Senegal, we now have three corn suppliers."

"That ensures a constant product flow. For Morocco, too, the prospects are good. They're ready to start harvesting," Giel explains.

"The prices of things like transport and fertilizer are considerably higher, but everyone has to deal with that. Hopefully, we can remain competitive."

"Demand was excellent throughout winter, which isn't always the case at that time of year. We had a lot of demand from Switzerland, but also from Spain. Their winter demand was remarkably higher than normal;  Spain isn't such a big corn-consuming country. Demand from Italy, too, which we supply via Dutch exporters, has continued well," says Giel.

Hermans started sowing corn for the Dutch season yesterday. The first Dutch sweet corn will be available again from mid-July and in larger volumes from August. What is new is that this year, the grower will also be cultivating five hectares of organic corn. "Most of that will go to the pre-cooked segment as vacuum cooked corn cobs."

Hermans has expanded its cultivation in Belgium too. "There's a growing trend that supermarkets want to source their products from their own country. We have the advantage that we can farm quite easily across the border with growers from all over. Germany is largely self-sufficient, but in Belgium, there are nice market opportunities for sales to local retailers. It's also an interesting crop for growers to include in their cultivation plans," Giel concludes.
