Effective pre-cooling is important in hot weather

The climate is changing, and Weber Cooling is changing accordingly. “The spring and summer of 2018 were very warm and many growers faced the challenge of still providing quality (cooling) products,” said Hans Juursema of Weber Cooling. According to him, effective pre-cooling, or rapid cooling of fruits and vegetables immediately after harvest, is now more important than ever. "In order to harvest the quality of the product, but also to limit the heat load in the cooling unit."

In addition to forced air cooling and water cooling, vacuum cooling is an increasingly needed technology. Hans said the technology offers considerable benefits, especially for leafy vegetables, herbs and mushrooms, but also for more compact crops such as broccoli. "This is because the vegetables are cooled uniformly from the inside to the outside. A vacuum is like an inverted microwave oven, which can cool the vegetables to a core temperature of 2 to 5 degrees Celsius, usually within 15 to 25 minutes."

Cooling more consciously and faster For (vacuum) cooling, a cooling technology is required, which usually uses coolants that are harmful to the environment. Completely environmentally friendly solutions are available, but these solutions are usually expensive for vacuum cooling. Beginning in 2019, Weber Cooling will be fully committed to "Hydronic Cooling". Compared with traditional cooling technology, this technology uses up to 70% less coolant and requires a smaller cooling capacity. "Thanks to the buffer technology, this also speeds up the cooling cycle by 20%."

High purchase prices are often an obstacle. Weber Cooling is working hard to make vacuum cooling available to anyone, and because of standardization, they can make machines that are reasonably priced. "For example, the standard'Hydronic Powered' system for four Euro pallets or three standard pallets is priced at 75,000 Euros. In addition, we are also committed to expanding our range of used and stationary machines, supplemented by a series of rental vacuums. Cooler."
