"We find ourselves in a situation where mushroom prices in Asia are skyrocketing. Whether it is containers, air freight, energy prices or packaging, these have pushed prices up further. At the product level, Harold said that after Covid, the product range has been significantly reduced. "The high cost means that many growers stop growing'new' crops. The current air freight prices make it too expensive to focus on special mushrooms. Therefore, only the best-selling ones are left. As usual, at this time of the year, special mushrooms The wild forest mushrooms are growing well."
"All magazines are again full of recipes," he continued. "Then demand automatically picked up again. Our company also sold more and more truffles. We invested in machines to provide our customers with various sizes of truffles. This has become a very stable sales branch."
Last year, Westland Mushrooms replaced the cooling system in the Dutch factory. It now has a sustainable, carbon dioxide-based system. The mushroom supplier has already used a third refrigeration system. It is used as an overnight cooler behind the dock. “Trade is uninterrupted 24 hours a day. This new cold storage has good access control. Therefore, drivers can pick up goods day and night,” Harold concluded.
